P.O.M.E.R.A.N.I.A.N. Revival

It’s nearly May, where has P.O.M.E.R.A.N.I.A.N. gone??  We could blame our failure on a number of reasons, but we all know the reason:  WE ARE ALL PROCRASTINATORS.  

Sure, there’s been a lot of school work, but we’ve all had bits of free time in between.  If we spent a bit of time now and then on this project, we could have had a chapter out by now!

So, in an attempt to revive this old project, a revised deadline schedule has been made!  This time around, we are taking on a new strategy: MANY SHORT DEADLINES.

If we fail this time around, we just suck.

If you are participating, please read the instructions carefully.

Our target deadline is ONE MONTH:  June 1st.

Instructions

You will create blog posts to submit each task.  These blog posts will be SCHEDULED, right now.  This way, the posts will appear on the due date no matter what!

The tasks were divided into weekly themes as follows:

  • Week 1 – Idea Development and Foundations (April 30 – May 6)
  • Week 2 – Characters (May 7 – May 13)
  • Week 3 – Scripting and Comic Prep (May 14 – May 20)
  • Week 4 – Drawing (May 21 – May 27)
  • Week 5 – Finishing Touches (May 28 – May 31)

Please look over the schedule carefully so you can pace yourself more accurately.

If you finish a task earlier, feel free to start working on another task.

**** If you are NOT finished with the task, please finish it to THE BEST of your ability before the deadline, fulfilling all the assignment requirements even if it is not PERFECT.  

If you finish another assignment early, you can then go back and fix any problems with your other assignments.

Before You Start

Here are some things to consider THROUGHOUT the month:

  1. We need someone to MAN up and take responsibility for the first issue’s colored cover.  This can be worked on throughout the month and submitted before May 31.  Please let me know anytime if someone can handle this!
  2. Advertisements and articles are going to be submitted on a volunteer basis.  If you have time to make an ad or article now and then, please submit them.
  3. Task 14 is supposed to be worked on throughout the month.  Be sure to take a look at this task right away.  DO NOT SAVE THIS FOR THE LAST DAY.

Task 1:  Getting a General Idea

Due Date:  Tuesday, May 1, 11:59 PM (1 day)

Goal:  To get a basic idea of what your comic will be about AND committing to it.  We can’t move on if everyone keeps starting over!  Let’s commit RIGHT NOW.

Details:  Provide the following information.

One Sentence Description

Examples:

  • Naruto:  An outcast ninja boy fights to be the chief of his village.
  • Ranma 1/2:  A martial arts loving boy turns into a girl when hit with cold water.
  • Inuyasha:  A school girl teams up with a dog boy to find pieces of a jewel to save the world.
  • Steins Gate:  A mad-scientist discovers time travel using his cellphone and microwave.
  • Sgt. Frog:  A team of alien frogs try to take over the world.

Age Rating

  • E – Everyone/A – All Ages:  Like a “G” movie rating, the “E – Everyone” or “A – All Ages” rating means that the comic is suitable for readers from age 6 and up.
  • Y – Youth, Age 10+:  Similar to a “PG” movie rating, the “Y – Youth, Age 10+” rating means that the title may contain mild violence and/or cursing.
  • T – Teens, Age 13+:  The rating equivalent of a “PG-13,” “T – Teen” indicates that the comic’s content may include some sexual innuendo and/or violent action scenes.
  • OT – Older Teens, Age 16+:  “OT – Older Teen”-rated comics may contain more explicit sexual situations and some violent scenes, including blood and gore.
  • M – Mature, Age 18+:  Comics rated “M – Mature” is strictly for adults.  You can expect to find some explicit sexual situations, strong language and/or bloody battles and mayhem.

Task 2:  About the Author

Due Date:  Tuesday, May 1, 11:59 PM (1 day)

Goal:  This has to be done and it’s fairly easy, so let’s just knock this one out in a day shall we?

Details:  Provide the following information.

  • Quick sketch of self (in cartoon form of course)
  • Pomeranian dog representation
  • Author name (pen name)
  • Horoscope zodiac
  • Favorite genres
  • Hobbies
  • Something freaky about yourself

Task 3: Title and Logo

Due Date:  Wednesday, May 2, 11:59 PM (1 day)

Goal:  The title and logo.

Details:  Create a title and logo for your comic.

Task 4:  Setting

Due Date:  Friday, May 4, 11:59 PM (2 days)

Goal:  Set the scene for your comic.

Details:  Provide the following information in as much detail as you want.

  • Time – Is your comic taking place in present-day?  Past?  Future?  Medieval times?  Prehistoric times?
  • Place – Your hometown?  The United States?  Ireland?  Japan?  Canada?  A made-up place?
  • Surroundings – What kind of environment is it?  Upper class?  Poverty-stricken?  Artistic?  Think about the types of clothes the people wear, the way they’ll speak, etc.
  • Situation – Are your characters fresh out of high school?  Almost graduating?  Abandoned by their parents?  What’s going on before the story starts?  Where do you want to start?
  • Sketches – Provide some sketches of your scenery.  There isn’t a set amount required, but you should try to include a couple of main places your characters will be interacting in.  Some ideas are:
    • School
    • Home
    • Transportation (bus stop, etc)
    • Favorite hangouts
    • Work

Task 5:  Plotting

Due Date:  Sunday, May 6, 11:59 PM (2 days)

Goal:  Develop a plot for your comic.

Details:  Completely develop the details of your comic’s plot.  The details you want to reveal are entirely up to you.  However, you should take this seriously because it’s one of the most important parts of your comic!

Things to consider:

  • Where do you want to begin?
  • How do you want the series to end?
  • What scenes would you like to include?
  • How much do you want to add to this chapter?
  • How would you like the chapter to end?
  • What information do you want to incorporate into each chapter?
  • Tips for plotting.
  • Tips for planning your first chapter.

Task 6:  Protagonist

Due Date:  Wednesday, May 8, 11:59 PM (2 days)

Goal:  Develop your main character.

Details:  Here you will develop your main character.  If there are several main characters, try to choose one.  If you can’t decide, ask yourself:  Which perspective will the comic follow?  Which character is introduced first?  If you insist that you have several main protagonists that cannot be classified as support, go ahead and create them during this phase too.

  1. Provide at least one drawing of the character.
  2. Provide additional information about the character using your own discretion.  Reveal as much or as little as you want to the audience.

  • Relationships
  • Goals

Task 7:  Antagonist

Due Date:  Thursday, May 10, 11:59 PM (2 days)

Goal:  Develop your antagonist.

Details:  Here you will develop your antagonist.  This can be a villain or just a rival.  It’s up to you.  Just create a character to oppose your protagonist.

  1. Provide at least one drawing of the character.
  2. Provide additional information about the character using your own discretion.  Reveal as much or as little as you want to the audience.

  • History
  • Reactions/Mannerisms
  • Relationships
  • Goals
  • Hopes/Fears

  • Secrets
  • Agenda with the protagonist

Task 8:  Support

Due Date:  Sunday, May 13, 11:59 PM (3 days)

Goal:  Develop your support characters.

Details:  Here you will develop your support characters.  These are support characters that actually play a role in the story, not background characters or characters that just appear in side stories.  Include as many as you want.

  1. Provide at least one drawing of the character.
  2. Provide additional information about the character using your own discretion.  Reveal as much or as little as you want to the audience.

  • Physical appearance
  • Personality
  • History
  • Reactions/Mannerisms
  • Relationships
  • Goals
  • Hopes/Fears
  • Pet Peeves
  • Secrets

Task 9:  Script

Due Date:  Wednesday, May 16, 11:59 PM (3 days)

Goal:  Create the actual dialogue that will appear in the comic.

Details:  Write the dialog IN FULL.  To prevent people from copying or spoiling, follow these instructions:

  1. Write out the entire script for the first chapter.
  2. Paste it into google translate and choose a language that uses different characters  (example:  Chinese, Korean, Kannada, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Yiddish)
  3. Take a screenshot of the script.
  4. Resize the screenie into a reasonable size.
  5. Upload the screenshot.

These steps are all for your own privacy.  I know this risks people cheating the system and writing gibberish, but all of these tasks are guidelines to help you finish your comic.  You’re only cheating yourself!

This screenshot is for everyone to see that the whole group is participating, which will encourage others to work hard as well.

Task 10:  Frames and Panels

Due Date:  Thursday, May 17, 11:59 PM (1 day)

Goal:  Create the frame and panel structures for each page.

Details:  Frame and panel structure is actually an important part of a comic.  It creates emphasis for certain scenes and  it keeps the reader’s attention.  Submit the frames and panels for each page.  These can be thumbnails, please do not post up the actual sizes.

Example

Things to consider:

  • Avoid having too many panels on a single page to avoid overcrowding.
  • Try to use different shapes once in a while.  Having every panel as a square may get boring for the reader.
  • Be aware of the location of each panel.  The reader shouldn’t get lost when trying to read your comic!  It needs to flow!

Task 11:  Layout

Due Date:  Sunday, May 20, 11:59 PM (3 days)

Goal:  Complete the rough draft of the comic by finding the right layouts in each panel for the pictures and dialogue bubbles.

Details:  Using the dialogue and page frames/panels created earlier this week, create a final copy of your rough draft.  Draw a rough sketch (this can be stick figures) of what each panel should contain, as well as which dialogue will go inside.

This should be an accurate rough draft of your final submission so it’ll be easier to start drawing next week.  You won’t have to worry about the dialogue and layout and you’ll just be able to concentrate on drawing.

Things to consider:

  • Character placement
  • Angles
  • Scenery

Make sure to create a layout that will emphasize what you want to stand out!

Task 12:  Drawing

Due Date:  Monday, May 21, 11:59 PM (7 days)

Goal:  This is the actual drawing of the pages.

Details:  You will submit AT LEAST one finished page of your comic EACH DAY of this week.  Submit them to me via email or MSN.

Finished page considerations:

  • Inked
  • Screened
  • Typed dialog (font suggestion: Anime Ace)

At the end of the week, ONLY the pages that I have will be put into the magazine, so plan accordingly.

For each person who does not submit a page for a day, I will draw the page for you, on toilet paper, and it will consist of a stick figure revealing a secret about yourself.

By the time this task’s post is published on Monday night, you should have already submitted page one of your comic.

For this task’s post, just copy and paste the following:

I, [insert name], agree to submit all my comic pages by the end of the week.  I will submit at least 1 page per day and understand the risks of not submitting a page.  All pages submitted will be final versions and I will not try to take them back.  My [insert adjective] [insert noun] from [insert place] [insert adjective][insert verb] .  Happy New Year.

For each day, I’ll post a comment on this task for each person who turned in a page.  This way we can keep track of everyone’s progress.

Task 13:  Cover

Due Date:  Tuesday, May 29, 11:59 PM (2 days)

Goal:  The black and white cover page for your comic.

Details:  Create a 1-page black and white cover for your comic.  This should include the title, appropriate picture, author, and chapter name if applicable.

Task 14:  Journal

Due Date:  Thursday, May 31, 11:59 PM (optional, but still must be scheduled)

Goal:  To not jinx ourselves by having 13 tasks.  Also, to have a place to write our thoughts on the whole process so we can review what needs to be fixed in the system for next time.

Details:  Add any comments you have about the entire process here whenever you feel like it.  This is just a journal of anything you have to say during the whole month.  Add dates if you want.

Examples are:

  • You have extra time during a task.
  • You did not have enough time during a task.
  • The task instructions were difficult to understand.
  • You didn’t like something.
  • You had trouble with something.
  • You liked something.
  • Etc…
