P.O.M.E.R.A.N.I.A.N. Research 101: Plotting

Well, it’s getting down to the wire for our first P.O.M.E.R.A.N.I.A.N. submissions!  How far is everyone?  I hope AT LEAST you’ve gotten as far as the plot.  -cough-

Art might be the first thing that the reader notices, but what keeps them from losing interest is a strong plot!

How strong is your plot?

For anyone who has taken an English class, you should now the basic pattern of a story.

  1. Introduce the characters and the the setting.
  2. Present the problem that needs to be solved.
  3. Find the solution.
  4. Conclude.

Doesn’t seem too hard right?

When first starting your plot, you don’t necessarily need to know how it’s going to end yet.  Just be sure that your characters have enough to do while pursuing their goal to fill up some manga space!

Some Examples

Kagome is a modern Japanese high school girl.  Never the type to believe in myths and legends, her worldview dramatically changes when, one day, she’s pulled out of her own time and into another!  There, in Japan’s ancient past, Kagome discovers more than a few of those dusty old legends are true, and that her destiny is linked to one legendary creature in particular– the dog-like half-demon called Inuyasha!  That same trick of fate also ties them both to the Shikon Jewel, or “Jewel of Four Souls.”  But demons beware… the smallest shard of the Shikon Jewel can give unimaginable power!

Ranma 1/2

At Tendo’s school of indiscriminate grappling all is not well.. Cute-looking but foul-tempered school-girl Akane has just been told she’s got to marry the boy father has selected – Ranma.  Only Ranma’s no ordinary boy.  Owing to a freak accident involving a sacred spring in China, Ranma has got problems.  Serious problems.  Every time Ranma gets wet he grows breasts and changes sex.  Mind you, it could be worse… his father changes into a panda!  Of course, Akane hates the boy Ranma on sight, but Ranma the girl she could really be friends with.  And so the stage is set for volume 1 in a fast and furious tale of martial arts, school-girl crushes and gender bending from Rumiko Takahashi, Japan’s most famous comic writer.

Kingdom Hearts II

In the quiet little hamlet of Twilight Town, there lives a boy named Roxas.  He and his friends Hayner, Pence and Olette are trying to enjoy their final days of summer vacation, when strange things begin to happen.  First the group is falsely accused of stealing photos from all over town.  Then they are attacked by bizarre, white creatures.  But the oddest occurrences are the recurring dreams Roxas has of a boy named Sora, and the presence of a girl named Namine, who has a mysterious secret to share with Roxas.

Boys Over Flowers

Although Tsukushi Makino is from a poor family, she attends an elite school for the super rich, where her life becomes intertwined with the “F4,” the ruling boys of the school, in a whirlwind of love and confusion!

  1. I thought you didn’t HAVE your plot yet? (Did I cap the right word? O 3 O) Most of the descriptions seem like scenarios. We just need a scenario, right? Hope so, cuz’ that’s what I got.

Same boat, I have no problem in mind and consequently no solution. If anything there is a minor conflict towards the end of the manga but otherwise pure drama 😦 There are plenty of scenes tho.
